Listen to the December 6, 2011
By creating internal social networks, Yammer helps to connect people, especially those that work in very large organizations that might not have as much of a centralized ‘headquarters’.
December 7, 2011 This week we had an opportunity to sit down with Maria Ogneva of Yammer. Yammer is like an enterprise version of a private social media network, similar to Ning.
Yammer believes in social enterprise and enterprise culture. By creating internal social networks, they help to connect people, especially those that work in very large organizations that might not have as much of a centralized ‘headquarters’. Internal networks allow workers to tap into a culture, to belong in a more personalized way to their company.
Maria also gave our listeners some excellent social media advice – some of it was the same as what we have been telling people about LinkedIn! She recommends those on Yammer upload photos and list their various expertise.
When she advises people to upload pictures on social media, Maria says that headshots are above and beyond the best. Taking a headshot allows people to look at you directly. It is the digital equivalent of looking someone in the eye. She also mentioned studies have shown people are more likely to respond to personal pictures than to company avatars.
Finally, Maria spoke about the importance of ‘owning your name’. For example, there is more than one Maria Ogneva on twitter, so Maria decided to ‘out-Maria’, and using the twitter handle @themaria she has created an online persona. She exists on all sorts of social media platforms and makes herself easy to find.
This was such an awesome interview; it was great getting to chat with Maria. Remember to tune in Mondays at 7pm for more great tips, and until then, Rock On!
