This weekend I received the following message from LinkedIn about a group that I have been a part of:
“Lori, we noticed you haven’t visited [Group Name] lately. To help keep your email tidy, we’ve switched you from daily emails to weekly digests from this group – we hope this suits you better!”
This is not a way for LinkedIn to operate! I’d rather they assume that the members of a group have their settings the way they want them. If the member does not like getting emails frequently, they will take it upon themselves to change it. Switching settings for members will only serve to alienate them in a misguided attempt to assist, and can only result in reduced participation, which helps no one. I responded to LinkedIn with:
If I had wanted it changed, I would have done it myself. But thanks for the thought. I just don’t need you to make decisions based on your perception of my actions. I read the daily digest rather than visiting the group live very often. I’ve changed it back and am taking the time to send a message to ask you to leave my settings the way I have set them.
Thank you.
I hope this helps group leaders out there! If you’re aware that LinkedIn is changing your members’ settings, you might be more inclined to encouraged your members to visit your group and keep them engaged.
