Listen to the July 3, 2012 show!
Happy Independence Day to all!
We had an exciting guest on Monday, who we really met through quite a bread crumb trail. You see, way back in about 2008 during our opening LinkedIn training courses we taught a man named Rob Mendez. Rob was so taken by what he learned that he actually went and became a ‘chronic LinkedIn user’ himself. He took what he had learned from us and began teaching others. One of the people that he helped was Rufus, who was our guest this week.
Rufus reached out to Lori on Rob’s recommendation when he was starting to take his own marketing to the next level.
We spoke a little about how common interests often bring people together on social media, especially since we had Molly, our dog in the interview room with us. We hear people say all the time that they had met people through groups or speaking about common interests.
We then moved on to discussing his e-book as well as his awesome website. We asked Rufus what he thinks the biggest mistake small businesses make when marketing themselves on LinkedIn. He responded that they fail to articulate what makes them unique. When people read advertisements, they are asking themselves who the company is, and why they should care what they have to say. As a close second, they fail to turn their features into benefits.
As a personal marketing too, Rufus offers a guarantee with his services. He will generate a minimum of new business to cover his own costs, or he will work for free until he does. This guarantee helps make many new customers feel confident and comfortable, and it also makes him worker harder.
Rob recommends when building a website that you create a strong headline and create an opt in feature with something that is enticing and of value. Build a list and use the list to send out follow up emails and develop relationships.
After Rob left we spoke with Mackenzie of Splash Media U about their techniques for building Twitter engagement. She says that they create cubes of people for particular industries and send out banks of questions periodically to individuals to help build engagement.
This was a great interview with a great deal of helpful information. We highly recommend you check it out. Remember to tune in next week on Monday at 7pm for more awesome LinkedIn tips!
